In 2026, Cologne-based pianist Felix Hauptmann will receive a commission from Cologne Jazzweek and NICA artist development for a unique project. United by a shared sensitivity to textures and rhythms, Hauptmann brings together Lithuanian flutist Ketija Ringa Karahona, Canadian trumpeter Lina Allemano, Cologne-based bassist Roger Kintopf, and Cuban drummer Francisco Mela for “Yards & Empathy.” In search of ever-new stimuli for playing together, the musicians are constantly exploring collective musical processes. In a formation selected specifically for this program, Hauptmann’s pieces unfold a depth that can only arise from the juxtaposition of structure and freedom. The musicians’ voices interweave into dense, organic structures where precisely defined forms meet free expression. The result is music that is as powerful in its quiet moments as it is in its eruptive ones.
