NICA x CJW: Felix Hauptmann – YARDS & EMPATHY

As part of NICA x CJW, Felix Hauptmann presents the world premiere of YARDS & EMPATHY—made possible by the annual collaboration between Cologne Jazzweek and NICA artist development, pianist Felix Hauptmann was commissioned to create a composition for a striking, unique project.

United by a special sensitivity for textures and rhythm, Hauptmann has assembled the Latvian flutist Ketija Ringa Karahona, the Canadian trumpeter Lina Allemano, the bassist Roger Kintopf, and the Cuban drummer Francisco Mela for the program. In search of ever-new inspirations and possibilities for ensemble playing, the musicians are constantly exploring collective musical processes. In a formation selected specifically for this program, Hauptmann’s compositions unfold a special depth that arises from a delicate juxtaposition of structure and freedom. The individual voices of his fellow musicians interweave into dense, organic structures where precisely defined forms meet free expression. The result is music that is as powerful in its quiet moments as it is in its eruptive ones.
