The name fits perfectly: The name fits: PARZ is a radical distillation of the surname Parzhuber down to its essence. It’s the name of the trio led by Cologne-based drummer Alexander Parzhuber, who has teamed up with Fabian Dudek (alto saxophone, Ableton, wind controller) and Oliver Lutz (electric bass) to create a sound that brings Yellowjackets-style jazz fusion into the present day, resulting in music that packs as much of an immediate punch as Knower’s or is as atmospherically dense as Bon Iver’s. At Cologne Jazzweek, the trio will perform together with special guest Olga Reznichenko (keys), who was recently awarded the German Jazz Prize.
To achieve such a compelling result, one must also perform as a unified whole. That is precisely what PARZ does: everything superfluous is set aside, and together with Reznichenko, the focus is on the essential: the physical presence of their respective instruments. This way, the ensemble functions as a high-energy unit that has broken free from rigid jazz conventions and places playfulness at the forefront.
