Peter Bernstein, born in New York in 1967, stands as a guitarist at the intersection of jazz tradition and modernity. His fellow instrumentalist Jim Hall invited the young jazz guitar student to perform at the renowned JVC Jazz Festival in New York, which marked the beginning of a career as a sideman for both “old-school jazz veterans” and prominent “Young Lions.” For ten years, he played in saxophonist Lou Donaldson’s band, and drummer Jimmy Cobb, organist Dr. Lennie Smith, and saxophonist David Fathead Newman frequently invited him into the studio or onto the stage. At the same time, he was the guitarist for saxophonist Joshua Redman, worked with pianist Brad Mehldau and his instrumental colleague Diana Krall, and performed alongside bassist Christian McBride. Experiences he now brings to his own quartet. This quartet’s modern jazz features a laid-back swing, with the themes of the pieces serving as the foundation for an eloquently phrased, inventive art of improvisation.
