With BONECRUSHER, Matthias Muche has at his disposal a large ensemble that allows sound to be organized into a structure that can be experienced spatially. No less than ten trombones and percussion form a hybrid body of sound in which microtonal layering, spectral densification, and balanced harmonic processes can unfold. At the heart of the current program is the Cologne premiere of a work by Berlin-based Swedish composer Ellen Arkbro. Her music, focused on precise intonation and slow harmonic transformation, meets the immense sonority of the ten trombonists and percussion. The program is complemented by works by Muche, which were developed specifically for this ensemble and which condense and differentiate the ensemble’s sonic possibilities. The result is a concentrated, immersive sound architecture that places the act of listening itself at the center.
