Evan Parker & Peter Evans

together with Zimmermann & Lienhard

Although the British musician Evan Parker, born in 1944, and the American trumpeter Peter Evans, born in 1981, are a generation apart in age, they share a similar approach to improvised music and their use of extended playing techniques. Saxophonist Parker was one of the first improvisational artists in Europe to incorporate solo concerts into his work, for which he played exclusively the soprano saxophone. Like his younger colleague Evans on the trumpet, Parker relies on auditory streaming, in which an instrumental part is perceived as two or more melodies. And, again like Evans, Parker creates this phenomenon primarily through the use of multiphonics, circular breathing, and split tones. And anyone familiar with these two artists knows that when they come together for a duo performance, they by no means reduce their improvisational music to mere technical feats. Rather, they will draw upon their entire repertoire of technical mastery to reveal their very own melodies to the audience.
