Another exciting, collaborative project at this year’s Cologne Jazzweek is the English duo with jazz pianist, keyboardist, electronic musician and composer Dan Nicholls and jazz drummer and multi-instrumentalist Dave De Rose, who moved from Rome to London in 1996. Together with filmmaker and live video artist Lou Zon (Louise Boer), who teaches at Goldsmiths University Of London and whose research focuses on ecology, plant medicine, feminism, improvisation and experiments with analogue techniques, they lay out danceable ambient soundscapes of electro-acoustic improvisations. Nicholls, who also plays with Matt Calvert, Kit Downes and Shabaka Hutchings, completed his master’s degree with the exceptional British pianist and Jazzpar award winner Django Bates and also works with Lou Zon in the collective Free Movements, which combines free improvisation with rave to create spaces for sound, movement and deep listening.
