It is a pan-European trio that the pianist and composer Kirke Karja, born in Estonia in 1989, founded in 2020 with the German drummer Ludwig Wandinger and the French bassist Etienne Renard. The exciting thing is that the musicians, who are almost the same age, experiment with unusual parameters of improvisation. With them, it can happen that the harmonies of Paul Hindemith become the basis for free-flowing, collectively created music. They also often allow themselves to work together to develop dynamic aspects in a differentiated way, to utilise the entire range of acoustic expression possibilities or to change rhythmically from a concrete beat to a shimmering pulse on an ad hoc basis. It is universal music, because on the one hand it clearly emphasises its roots in the Afro-American tradition, but on the other it also allows the cultural terroir of Europe to come to light.
