Born in 1970 in the motor city of Detroit, Craig Taborn became known in his early 20s through his collaboration with saxophonist James Carter, on whose albums “The Real Quietstorm” and “Conversations With The Elders” he set extraordinary improvisational accents. This was followed by recordings with improvisers such as Roscoe Mitchell, Susie Ibarra and Evan Parker as well as sonic experiments with electronics and samples and the use of organ and Moog synthesiser. Between avant-garde and traditional, ambient and the Detroit techno music scene, Taborn has developed melodic soundscapes that he has continued to develop since his first solo recording for ECM in 2001. His solo concerts are improvisational journeys of discovery. He himself says: “I just start and try to connect everything that happens, such as motivic, rhythmic or structural details, and let the music emerge from the material itself, as well as from the sound of the instrument itself.
