Johannes Klingebiel (drums), Kenn Hartwig (bass), Leonhard Huhn (here on synthesizer), and Christian Lorenzen (saxophone, electronics, vocals) met while studying in the Jazz/Pop department at the Cologne University of Music and Dance; their quartet C.A.R. was founded in 2011, when Klingebiel and Hartwig graduated from there.
There are references for the C.A.R. sound. Of course, there’s Karlheinz Stockhausen with his electroacoustic New Music, who taught Jaki Liebezeit, Holger Czukay, and Irmin Schmidt before they founded CAN and caused a sensation with Krautrock. But for C.A.R., jazz-rock also plays a role, with its odd time signatures and expansive soundscapes, as does proto-techno à la Kraftwerk, metal, or math-rock.
The four members of C.A.R. simply call their mix Kraut-Jazz—and are thus open to fusions of all kinds: with rock and pop, with electronic dance music, with rocking jazz, or jazzy rock. Their stylistic openness certainly also reflects the aesthetic diversity of their music.
