Pianist Stefan Schultze and saxophonist Peter Ehwald have known each other since their student days, when they played in each other’s bands such as Oktoposse, the Backyard Jazz Orchestra or the Stefan Schultze Large Ensemble. As a matter of course, they also came together as a duo to work together on the vocabulary for a language in jazz. It was clear to them that if they were to add another instrument, it would have to be the drums, as this would support and challenge them in their search for structure and form in improvised music. Their choice fell on Tom Rainey, with whom they have been playing in a trio since 2016. The exploration of sound at the moment of its creation: Schultze, Ehwald and Rainey seem to be interested in nothing else. An interval from the piano, an overblown note from the tenor saxophone or a rhythmic pattern from the cymbal becomes the impulse for an excursion in the flow of improvising together: intuitive in posture, differentiated in phrasing and introspective in timbre.
