Roger Kintopf was born in Darmstadt in 1998, into a musical family, as they like to say. As a child, he claims to have spent hours listening to music about music. Not yet 20 years old, he began studying at the jazz/pop department of the Cologne University of Music and Dance, first with Dieter Manderscheid and then with Robert Landfermann. He has played in small ensembles such as Trio Percussion and large orchestras such as the Pascal Klewer Bigband, and likes to give his own ensembles neologistic names such as Structucture. He has been playing solo on the double bass since 2021. He likes to break up the sound into its acoustic ‘spectral colours’, his solo performance is given structure and form through the free flow of improvisation and thus acquires an unexpected authenticity. Instead of a regular press release, there is a poem about him as a soloist: ‘It feels like / a flickering light at dusk, / soft shadows on the pavement, / a beating heart, / pressing against the ribs.’
