Koichi Makigami is not just a musician who plays the piccolo trumpet and theremenin, sings and composes. Born in Japan in 1956, he is also a poet, writer and actor who explores the avant-garde theatre of his home country and made a name for himself in off-theatre in New York in the 1970s. He was the first person named by ‘Featured Artist’ Marta Warelis when it came to choosing her duo partner for the new concert series ‘Stadt.Klang.Orte’, in which the entire city becomes a stage during Cologne Jazzweek. Like Warelis, Makigami is also in search of the unheard in music and the unseen in a performance. Like the Berlin-based Polish composer, he is not interested in just one direction or genre. Rather, his concerts are often fast-paced art performances in which the staging of the visual is just as important as the sounding of the acoustic – with the premise of improvising everything in real time.
