Die Hochstapler have been working together cooperatively since 2011. The collective and egalitarian way of working is reflected in the joy of playing. The jointly written pieces are only given structure and form live and are renegotiated in a constant process of deconstruction. Unconditional joy in experimentation is part of the concept, as is a tongue-in-cheek reference to jazz history. For their new programme, Die Hochstapler have adopted the quotes from Thelonious Monk that circulate as ‘Monk’s Advice’. They take requests such as ‘Let’s lift the bandstand!’, ‘You got to dig it to dig it, you dig?’ and ‘Always know’ literally and decode them metaphorically. For the impostors, the resulting templates become a reorganisation of Monk’s music and an examination of the personality of this solitaire of jazz history.
