The South Korean drummer Sun-Mi Hong began to take an interest in drums at the age of twelve in her hometown of In-Cheon, which her parents initially did not support, as they were too unsure of their daughter’s dream of becoming a musician. At the age of 17, she took drum lessons and four years later was accepted at the conservatory in Amsterdam, where she has lived ever since and has established herself as a permanent fixture on the Dutch improvisation scene. The recordings with her quintet of European improvisers have already won various prizes. Her latest project is the BIDA Orchestra, an all-star quintet from the international improvisation scene, which was created as part of the “Bimhuis Reflex Series”: with the Belgian keyboardist Jozef Dumoulin, who can also be heard with “Lilly Joel plays the Organ” in Cologne, the British bassist John Edwards, the Danish saxophonist Mette Rassmussen, the US saxophonist John Dikeman and the Scottish trumpeter Alistair Payne.
