Tijn Wybenga, born in 1993, is a composer and bandleader from Amsterdam. Between 2019 and 2021, he was “artist in residence” for the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. This renowned venue commissioned Wybenga to dig into the vibrant jazz scene in the Netherlands and research various aspects and trends of Holland’s improvised music. The goal of this work was to discover the sound of Amsterdam and the Netherlands in the 21st century. With his Amsterdam Modern Orkest (AM.OK for short), founded in 2016, he has released two albums, “Live @ BIMHUIS” and “Brainteaser,” the latter of which was awarded the 2022 German Jazz Prize in the category “Debut Album of the Year International.” Wybenga’s music is inspired by classical music, hip-hop and jazz, and incorporates influences from South Africa, Turkey and India. In addition to an analog instrumentation, live electronics are often used.
