At the end of last year, the second album of the quartet RE:CALAMRI around the Cologne bassist Oliver Lutz, simply titled 2, was released. On it you can hear improvisational music, which on the one hand with many unison passages of piano and keyboards (Pablo Held) and saxophone (Wanja Slavin) the Heydays of the jazz fusion era revive, but on the other hand also the tight grooves of an acoustic modern jazz between the leader Lutz and the drummer Andi Haberl in focus. It is always a real pleasure to follow the eruptive joy of playing of these four musicians from Cologne and Berlin, to hear how they model these intricate themes into the acoustic space, and to see how the rhythmic foundation of RE:CALAMARI’s music is often put under tension per se. In addition, experiments with different timbres, forms and dynamic processes enrich the aesthetic setting of this quartet.
