The Pablo Held Trio has been around since 2006, when the eponymous pianist was just in his early 20s, and his two fellow players Robert Landfermann (bass) and Jonas Burgwinkel (drums) were only slightly older. As a trio, the three musicians from Cologne have released eleven albums and, with numerous tours, have ensured that the Pablo Held Trio has an outstanding international reputation. For the most part, they play their concerts in a long arc and without breaks. In order to avoid routines in their interplay and to resist musical clichés from the outset, they have a repertoire of about 50 original and foreign compositions in their heads, which can be called up ad hoc on the fly. Almost as long, they regularly invite guest musicians to leave their own comfort zone and seek the challenge in the new – such as John Scofield, Chris Potter or Nelson Veras. For the concert with the Pablo Held Trio at Cologne Jazzweek, the three will be joined by guest Melissa Aldana, born in 1988 in the Chilean capital Santiago de Chile and living in New York since 2009. The saxophonist has a tone on her instrument that is both voluminous and energetically quiet, giving her a playful agility and flexibility to meet any aesthetic or musical task.
