Jakob Bänsch Quartet

Only 20 years old is the trumpeter and flugelhorn player Jakob Bänsch. Born in Pforzheim, he began playing the trumpet at the age of eight and became a junior student of Bastian Stein at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts when he was 15. Between 2020 and 2022 he belonged to the Bundesjazzorchester and was one of the youngest members in the history of this German next generation big band, then in 2021 he began studying jazz trumpet at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne. Last year, Bänsch founded his quartet. The four young musicians stand for contemporary jazz, which on the one hand is rooted in the US history of this music and is inspired by greats like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. On the other hand, they feel indebted to European musical culture and have created a repertoire that combines lyrical-melodic moments with abstract harmonies and jazz-like, swinging rhythms.
