The birthplace of the music collective Headless Society was the Cologne bar Acephale in 2019. The bar’s operator Dima Oboukhov, himself a music connoisseur and writer, spoke with pianist Philip Zoubek and saxophonist Leonhard Huhn about his idea – and with five other companions, the two started their monthly concert series at Acephale, which was called Headless Society and gave the seven-member collective its name. The goal four years ago was to develop new electronic, mainly improvised club music – with modified Gameboys, junk guitar, old Echolette tape echo, brand new synthesizer, microphones, electronified saxophone, a bass player and two drummers on stage. At the Cologne Jazzweek concert at Jaki below the Stadtgarten, the Argentinian cellist Violeta García will be there as a guest, who, like the seven Cologne collectivists, ignores boundaries between genres and deals with the material in an aesthetically open way.
